ASK BOB: Leave The Light On:
Do yourself a favour..When you put this CD on lock yourself away from interruptions and have the lyrics in front of you. It is a great way to appreciate the words and the music that bind.
On my first attempt I didn't get to do that and it did the album no justice. Step by step instructions for quality appreciation:
STEP 1: Check the cover and it's content. A very professional appearance. The major grab is the artistic pic on the front. Very few albums have the theme of the CD captured in the front cover as well as this one does. Exceptional interpretation and presentation.
STEP 2: Note the assistance of the legendary Mr Jeff McCormack. You know there will be added quality to the sound within.
STEP 3: Take the phone off the hook, lock the door and read and hear the passionate words of this emotive songwriter and the 'feel' the whole band brings to the understanding and possible drawing of their own parallels to the lyrics:
STEP 4: Consider the words.
STEP 5: Enjoy it again.
The Ask Bob Launch was a great success. Whatever aspect it is that each individual fan appreciates of Ask Bob they had it all on Saturday night. The music, the lyrics, the atmosphere, the band, the sound, the lights, the crowd. They will re-live the night through the CD and experience some great memories. At the next gig, who do I ask to hear another soulful rendition of Ordinary Man?
ASK BOB CD LAUNCH: Key Largo, Terrigal; July 23 2005:
Full moon, full house, full on!
You have to know you're doing something right when there is a full house at the launch of your new EP.
The name is becoming more familiar, the gigs more frequent and the band... maturing very nicely.
From the first meeting of the band at the Launch Pad band competition at Toukley last October to Saturday night, you can see that the band has developed a large fan base and become quite a tight unit.
The anticipation of the crowd was almost tangible. As soon as the first note was hit the dance floor was loaded and the vibe was electric.
A few songs from the new EP 'Leave The Light On' and some of the older works kept an expectant and appreciative crowd very well connected to the draw card that was, Ask Bob.
The rendition of Ordinary Man was quite moving. The atmosphere was made more inviting by the exceptional light and sound provided by Rob Vicary.
This was the first time I had the chance to see how newcomer Mick Geoghegan (bass) fitted with the boys. His playing was great and a few little slap pieces had some ardent fans quite obviously wanting more.
The soulful lyrics that Bob has penned seem to have taken on an emotive life and the musical platter they were served upon was pure gold.
The band has matured and there is a subtle noted presence of change to the style that Ask Bob had.
This is more varied and distinguishable.
I missed the support Act of Mike McCarthy but from all reports he was a fitting lead in.
It was a great night and I thank manager, Paul Karton for the invitation to attend.
Congratulations boys, the night was awesome. |

THE BIO |
ASK BOB:
ALL INFORMATION AND IMAGES IN THIS BIO SUPPLIED BY ASK BOB.
Formed mid 2003 amongst the rolling surf of the NSW Central Coast, Ask Bob are four musicians who not only play their own unique brand of music but can take the audience on that journey with them.
It's Roots/Rock like it's never been done before with an acoustic guitar that you would swear at times was electric, a harmonica that can cut the air like a knife before bringing you to your feet and all brought together by the bass and drums to provide a show that never fails to impress.
Their debut EP has been recorded at Rod and Jeff McCormack's studio, and Ask Bob are happy they spent the time to capture the band's original sound perfectly.
In the meantime the band have secured a distribution agreement to help take the sound of Ask Bob around Australia and the world.
In their short career, Ask Bob have performed live on air at ABC radio in both Newcastle and Central Coast, 2CCC FM and FBI Radio in Sydney.
They have won the inaugural Grand Melee Band Competition on the Central Coast, and have received good reviews for their song 'Lunatic' recently included on a compilation album release. |
REVIEW GIG - TERRIGAL WATERFRONT |
ASK BOB: Terrigal Waterfront:
Bob's Your Uncle...Well, he’s my brother actually… but not the one I speak of right now.
In fact Bob is four! Ask Bob, the refreshingly innovative band emerging from the vast assortment of talent that is our own home grown music scene. It would seem they are making an indelible impression on so many people.
Totally original in its lyrics and music content, I haven’t heard a sound like this from a local band before. Some deeply haunting harp sounds from an artistic and talented Chris Dick add “that something” to the songs that this band play so well.
Front man, Bob (funnily enough) Symonds’ voice and guitar adds a dose of unique character to the words and music that have been written from soul deep.
Seemingly unpretentious may be the player but not the sound and rhythm from Dan Peters’ bass while Mal Steele completes the sound on drums.
Those who were lucky enough to be strolling along the esplanade at Terrigal on Friday afternoon will have some memories of a great afternoon’s entertainment, another band to add to their ‘must see again’ list and a CD to add to the collection.
Speaking of CD’s… how can such a great sounding CD cost so little? Don’t ask me… Ask Bob!
