A new Realease from Maureen - UNDERCOVERED:
Posted 8th June 2012

The recent release of Maureen O’Brien’s 6th Album “UnderCovered” has been described as a quietly understated homecoming.

A reflection, perhaps, of the private – almost exclusive – launch event held recently in her home town of Newcastle NSW.

The album contains 11 original tracks plus a short prose against the acapella background of Mozart’s Dona Nobis Pacem. Typically, each song is message-driven as is typical of the folk genre, however this album cannot simply be categorised in the ‘folk’ category. Once again, O’Brien blurs the boundaries between blues/jazz/contemporary folk/ folk-rock as she blends melodies, lyrics and tempo into an eclectic fusion of listening pleasure.

“I’ve explored and experimented with many styles and sounds over the last decade but with this album I wanted to come back to an authentic sound – bring the music back home where it belongs, to the songwriting” she says.
“Finally, I am at peace in my skin of Songwriter. Confident that I have nothing to prove. My songs can stand the test of time for listeners who find what they seek…a song that has meaning to them alone. What more can a Songwriter ask for?”

The album was recorded locally at Sound Ideas Studio, Kotara. This is the studio of Robbie Long – multi-award-winning musician and recording engineer. Rob has provided additional instrumentation on most tracks. The album also showcases the vocals of emerging young artist Kait Hamilton (who hails from Lake Macquarie) on one track “Wanna Be”. Kait’s voice has been described as ‘fresh honey – smooth and sweet’.

Other local musicians who contributed to the recording include Russ Redford on harmonica and Diane Lenham on clarinet.
