THE EVENT - THE REVIEW |
NEW YEARS EVE CELEBRATIONS 2004:
Yesterday is another word for memories. This is what NYE celebrations were at The Entrance on Friday - a mixture of hope, support, compassion and entertainment.
The day started early for many, 6am to be exact. The sound guys, maintenance people, the stall holders busily prepared for the day and night ahead; the police and security officers went over plans and tactics. All the while most of us were either waking up, sleeping in or working our normal lives. Friday was also a day filled with amusement rides, eateries, stalls, clowns and laughter echoing across the parks.
At 5.30pm, local performers Hip Sister started off the musical entertainment from the Sails Stage. The trio of Carolyn, Jill and Narelle played and sang to a warm and appreciative crowd and a beautiful and serene sunset as their backdrop.
As expected the trio did not disappoint. They were the Hip Sister that has earned them a wonderful reputation that will ensure you continue to see their name on a gig guide for many days to come.
Right on schedule at 6pm , Peter Healy's Big Rhythm geared up on the Memorial Park stage. Peter kicked things off with a haunting solo and then joined in a duet with Phil King aka "King Rhythm". By song number three, the entire band - Lenny on drums, Paul on bass, Dave on sax and Krusty on keyboards - were proving why they are one of the most talented bands on the Coast.
Chris King and Pete the Pelican followed next to some enthralled kids and their parents. Chris even had some of the parents up on the stage to join in the antics as well.
Pete is The Entrance Town Centre Mascot and Chris is a face we have all come to know and love. His dedication to nurturing young talent has been a staple in this great area for more than a couple of decades now. Chris is an extremely talented individual who shares his experience and knowledge at his talent schools. The true professional that he is showed most clearly when at short notice he was called in to perform.
Come dusk and there was barely a spare blade of grass to be found. The park was full and was getting more and more crowded.
Early in the evening, a minute's silence was held to honour the victims of the tsunami tragedy. During the extremely touching 60 seconds, each and every person at Memorial Park stood perfectly still, and even young children showed their respect by pausing to reflect as best they could beside their parents.
Dave Proust was next on stage to entertain and showcase his own individual style of bush poetry. Dave has a long history here on the coast as an entertainer and was quite at home on the big stage.
The unique talents of the 'Psycho Taiko' drummers were next. Much like the Japanese practitioners of this ancient form of music, the four-piece ensemble proved hugely popular with the ever-increasing crowd. This was four of the original team and they had the crowd mesmerized with their show. Jacko and "The Lost Children of New Year's Eve" - an impromptu get-together organized by Jacko which saw him introduce some lost children on stage to countdown the seconds before the fireworks started. Put together by local company Central Coast Fireworks, the 15-minute display had much of the crowd oohing and aahing with delight.
To bring the night to an end, the members of Psycho Taiko joined Big Rhythm on stage to closeout an exceptional day of family entertainment.
As 2004 drew closer to its final hour, much of the 30,000 strong crowd left with big smiles to see in the New Year together.
