EVENT - AUSTRALIA DAY 2005 |
AUSTRALIA DAY - THE ENTRANCE 2005
Record Australia Day crowds flocked to The Entrance on Wednesday for the celebrations at Memorial Park.
The crowd began arriving from around 10.30am and continued to build up until the 9pm grand finale – the SeaFM Fireworks Spectacular. Organisers estimate that over 20,000 people attended the event.
The ‘Flavours of Australia Show’ sponsored by Masterfoods was a huge success with the variety of entertainment being very popular with the crowd.
The Bolivian trio, Yatiri, were definitely a hit with the crowd.
Following their performance on Memorial Park stage they moved to the Sails Stage, where they had many people dancing on the plaza!
Other very popular performers included the Chinese Acrobat & Magician, Jerry Liu, who had the crowd mesmerised. The Rhythm of Polynesia Dancers took the crowd to another place.
The magical moment during the ‘Flavours of Australia Show’ was listening to people in the crowd singing along in different languages to many of the acts, demonstrating the wonderful diversity and multiculturalism of modern Australia.
The Australiana Bands, Outback and the Murrumbidgee Rattlers, also kept the crowd entertained, as did the antics of bush poet, Gary Lowe.
Wyong Shire Council's Ambassador, Ray Price, got more than he bargained for during his visit. Apart from being the guest speaker during the official ceremony, he ended up judging ‘The Great Australian Ice Creamery’s Ice Cream Eating Competition’, and was even talked into the competition himself against compere and Wyong Shire Council’s Citizen of the Year, Graham ‘Jacko’ Jackson. However, he did prove himself to be a better footballer than Ice Cream Eating Champion, as Jacko won with ease!
Ray was also among a number of unsuspecting people who ended up joining in the Tug-o-War event, including Wyong Shire Council Rangers and Bernie Cinders, the NSW Fire Brigade mascot! In the official competition, Macquarie took out first place, with Maitland a close second.
The day finished with a big bang, as the sky exploded in a sea of light and colour. |
