Australian Flag imageWhats On Central Coast Logo Button image OUR AUSTRALIA DAY - 26th JANUARY:

A little History...

Like our country, the Australia Day national holiday is a relatively young event.

It wasn't until 1935 that all the Australian states and territories named it Australia Day and declared the 26th of January a national holiday.

It took until 1994 before Australia Day celebrations became consistent.

The date of 26th January refers to the First Landing Day or Foundation Day when Captain Arthur Phillip, arrived at Sydney Cove in 1788. Captain Arthur Phillip commander of the First Fleet, and the first governor of New South Wales, raised the Union Jack to symbolise British occupation of the eastern lands of Australia which was claimed by Captain Cook in 1770.

ADVANCE AUSTRALIA FAIR
Australians all let us rejoice
For we are young and free
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea:
Our land abounds in nature’s gifts
Of beauty rich and rare,
In history’s page let every stage
Advance Australia fair,
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia fair.
Beneath our radiant Southern Cross,
We’ll toil with hearts and hands,
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands,
For those who’ve come across the seas
We’ve boundless plains to share,
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair
FLAG PROTOCOL AND DISPLAY
Whats On Central Coast Logo Button image AUSTRALIAN FLAG PROTOCOL:
This is just a snippet from the Protocol page of Flag Fantastic

The following guidelines apply to the Australian national flag and to flags generally around the world:

The flag should be raised briskly and lowered ceremonially.

The flag should be treated with the respect and dignity it deserves as the national emblem.

The flag should not normally be flown in a position inferior to nor smaller than that of any other flag or ensign.

When flown in Australia, the Australian national flag takes precedence over all other national flags.

The flag should always be flown aloft and free and not allowed to fall or lie on the ground.

The flag should not be used to cover a table or seat; or to mask boxes, barriers or the space between floor and ground level on a dais or platform.

When the flag is raised or lowered, or when it is carried past in a parade or review, all present should face the flag and remain silent.
Those in uniform should salute.

Two flags should not be flown on the same flagpole.

The flag should not be flown upside down, not even as a signal of distress.

When the flag is represented, for example, as an illustration for commercial or advertising purposes:
- It should be used in a respectful manner and reproduced accurately
- It should not be defaced - that is, have superimposed on it printing or illustration/s
- It should not be covered by other objects
- All symbolic parts of it should be identifiable
